WLS Music Radio was set up by Keith York, Don Stevens and Steve Marshall in Galway. The given address – see below – (unfortunately using Eire with the rest of the address in English) was, of course, a huge indicator that they were not from Ireland.
They had all left Atlantic Sound – along with the rest of the staff – to form the new station in early 1985, lasting until 1987.
WLS Music Radio originally operated out of Kiltartan House, Forster St on 104.0MHz and 846kHz for 24 hours a day. WLS stood for West Local Station.
In May 1985, the station were the subject of a High Court action taken by RTÉ alleging interference to RTÉ2 television in the Galway area. WLS moved to 102.7MHz as a result.
WLS disappeared abruptly at the end of June 1987, just days after running a competition with a prize of £1,000.
