Laser 89 appeared in the Ballybricken area of Waterford shortly after the massive closedowns of December 1988. It was run by ex-ABC DJs Tony Murrell and Stephen Dee and came from above a pub. They first ran test broadcasts between January 9th-11th and then ran live programming on the 12th on 88.6MHz FM.
Described as sounding slick and professional, they announced themselves as ‘commercial-free radio for Waterford City’.
By February they had ceased transmissions owing to ‘TV interference’ according to a local newspaper. However the person who they had borrowed the transmitter from got cold feet and took back the rig.
