Cork pirate station
North Cork Community Radio (NCCR) started life in 1981 as North Cork Local Radio. The station lasted until the legislative closedowns at the end of 1988.
In its early days, North Cork Local Radio were on air on FM for a couple of hours on Saturdays and Sundays only. The original directors were local businessmen, namely Pat O’Brien. Michael Sullivan, Noel O’Connor and Maurice Brosnan. Noel and Michael had earlier worked on RTÉ’s mobile service when it was Mallow Community Radio.
NCLR were originally based in a private house before moving to The Majestic ballroom at Gouldshill on the south side of the town. The station deliberately strayed from the CHR format of other stations of the time.
They launched transmissions on 216m MW in October 1981.
By 1985 it had changed name to North Cork Community Radio (NCCR) and had become a community-based station with over a thousand shareholders.
NCCR ceased broadcasting on 31st December 1988 in compliance with the new Broadcasting Act.
