Liberty 104

Liberties Local Community Radio launched in March 1986 and grew in time to be one of the more prominent stations, especially following the name change to Liberty 104.

The station was located in Weaver Square in the south inner city area known as The Liberties. The studio was situated above station owner Sammy Prendergast’s shop – Sammy was well-known for installing the many antennas in use by the pirate radio community during that decade.

It was not too long after launch that the name was changed to Liberty 104 and late in 1988 it also used the name Gold 104.

Liberty 104 was available on a number of FM frequencies during its history and also on 1035kHz medium wave. The station’s antenna was located in Kilmashogue, just beside a farmhouse, on the foothills of the Dublin Mountains.

Scheduled to close in line with newly introduced government legislation at the end of 1988, Liberty shut down ten days ahead of schedule, suddenly and without announcement, on December 20th.

A personal Recollection – Kieran Murray

I worked as a Breakfast Show presenter from November 1987 to March 1988.
On my very first morning, upon arriving outside the station in Weaver’s Square, I saw a car close by and it had been burned out from the night before.
I began to think, did I make the right choice here?
Later that day, I was approached by a youth who asked me did I work for the radio station?
I replied “Yes”
He replied: “Your car will be safe. No-one will touch it”
He was true to his word!
