Kilkenny Community Radio lived up to the 'community' aspect of its name, being a true community access radio station on which many of today's community services are modelled. The station was a unique partnership between the directors who provided the finance and initiative, the presenters with the expertise and the Community Committee, who ensured standards and expectations were met.

The Community Committee was elected at the A.G.M. each year and represented local community groups and organisations.

K.C.R. set out to foster a greater community spirit and an awareness of the individuals obligations within the Community. They guaranteed access to both statutory and voluntary agencies, with voluntary groups particularly encouraged to provide information about their objectives and activities as a key to greater community awareness and participation.

In any one schedule there were over 40 DJs and presenters who, for the most part, gave their services to K.C.R. voluntarily

Forced to close at the end of 1988, the station returned to air with a licence in 1989 as Radio Kilkenny. When the station's franchise area was controversially redrawn in 2003 to include Carlow, they lost out in their bid for the licence. They eventually returned in 2011 as a community-licensed service Community Radio Kilkenny City.
