Louth pirate station
Independent Radio Dundalk
Radio Dundalk appeared on a test transmission on 220 metres on May 6th 1978. The station returned with tests the following weekend with a planned launch date of May 20th on 1367kHz (220m).
It was operated by Larry Magner and Hugh Hardy but a major split before the station launched led to Hardy leaving to set up his own station – Radio Carousel.
An increase in power led to Radio Dundalk being raided on July 12th and their transmitter was seized. They had been successful to this point but, unable to replace the transmitter, the weaker signal affected their coverage.
Radio Dundalk was based in the Fairways Hotel on Dublin Road and station manager was Heddy Eddie.
There was a period of jamming in March 1979 which Radio Dundalk claimed was caused by one of their rivals. They eventually ceased broadcasting on August 28th 1979 due to financial difficulties.
It was also known as Swinging Radio Dundalk.
Telephone number was 042 34652
