Wexford pirate station
Horizon Radio
Horizon Radio was a mid 80s Wexford station which broadcast to the south-east on FM only.
Founded in September 1984 by Paul Rowley and Alan McGuire, Wexford’s Horizon Radio was an FM only station which broadcast across the south-east on 98.8MHz.
Alan was the former station manager at Community Radio Wexford. Dissatisfaction with the way the station was being run led to McGuire planning Horizon Radio but problems with backers held it up.
At launch, their antenna, a sixty-foot mast with twin dipoles on top, was located at Forth Mountain, three miles west of Wexford town, but problems forced them to relocate to Castlebridge where the range was around twenty miles.
Horizon was based in a caravan in Alan McGuire’s back garden.
The station was live seven days a week from 8am to midnight.
