ABC 94FM

Memories and More

ABC FM was a Dublin pirate station who started FM broadcasting on September 25th 1995 and, after a few stop-starts, particularly in the '00s, they eventually called it a day in 2006.

Founded by Paul Barrett, Dublin’s ABC 94FM started broadcasting on September 25th 1995. At this point they broadcast automated output from the city centre on both 88FM and 94.2FM. Before long, 88FM was dropped and live programming was introduced and there was a near-enough full live schedule up until mid-1987.There was also a Sunday relay via the shortwave band.

The station ceased in December 1999, but returned a few months later with automated programming utilising voiced dj inserts replacing the live output. The playlist consisted of 60s – 90s music. They were now on 94.3MHz.

Despite major improvements to their broadcast equipment in their final couple of years, ABC were dogged by chronic luck and were off the air on their 94.3MHz frequency more than they were on.

They finished broadcasting in January 2001, with a relay of Premier FM (also on 92.6FM) going out on their transmitter. 94.3 was finally switched off altogether in August 2001, with low-powered tests from ABC appearing on 87.6MHz for a short period

In 2003 they announced plans for SW only transmissions but were back on FM on 87.6 by May 2006, on air as ABC 87.6 on weeknights and weekends.

A public row with a dance music pirate led to the station once again calling it a day in October 2006.

ABC still exists today as an online only network of stations.

Afterthought: They had a few sister stations operating as either opt outs or on a edicated frequency of their own, namely:- Kiss FM; GLR FM; Beat FM & Gold FM.
