4FM launched on February 27th 2009 at 6am with Gareth O’Callaghan on air.
Operating under a multi-city licence, the station covered four of the country’s major population centres of Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway - hence the name. Because of the terrain Co Clare was also covered in the transmission area.
Its licence remit was to operate an easy-listening service for over 45s. There was a major emphasis on speech programming in the early days but this struggled. As a result a lot of their original speech programming was dropped or moved around in the schedule.
A rebrand to Classic Hits 4FM occurred in 2011. The 4FM part of the name was dropped in 2018.
4FM is Ireland’s new multi-city radio station, broadcasting to counties Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Clare.

The best music variety, morning entertainment, conversation and guests. Features will include Your Say on 4, also, 4 of the Best, plus, songs from 4FM’s Album of the Week and the Record of the Week.
Midday Kiberd on 4
A topical phone-in show featuring people in the news.
2pm McColl on 4
A music intensive show with celebrity chat. Features include non-stop oldies, one hour of music from the ’60s and ’70s at 3 o’clock every afternoon along with 4FM’s featured Irish Artist and The 4 Word of the Day.
5pm McGurk on 4 (right)
A fast-paced music and current affairs show that sums up the day.
7pm Soundtrack on 4 with Gerry Stevens
A regular two hour music show featuring the sounds of the sixties and seventies.
